As near as we can tell, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Christie stitched this sampler in
England in 1884. She was obviously an accomplished stitcher as the variety of
stitches used in the sampler shows. The colors are quite bright for that period
and she used an unusually large variety. She used four different stitch types;
the cross stitch, the Algerian Eyelet, the Back Stitch, and the Whip Stitch.
The finished sampler is approximately 12 ½ inches X 16 inches (122 stitches
wide and 161 stitches high). The fabric is 10 ct. #1231 Canvas, Penelope
Brown, #39 from Wichelt Imports, Inc.
The thread is DMC floss.
Born in 1819, Elizabeth Kirkman lived in England and
completed this sampler when she was 7 years old in 1826. As
you can see, she was quite accomplished as a stitcher at a
very young age.
The finished sampler is approximately 9 1/4 inches X 6 7/8
inches (131 stitches wide and 97 stitches high). The fabric is
28 ct. Cashal Linen #3281, in Dirty Linen, from Wichelt
Imports, Inc. The thread is silk floss, from Needlepoint Silk, Inc.
